Model of BRM Formula 1 racing car to be installed in Coggles Causeway
A lasting reminder of Bourne’s motor racing heritage is to be installed in the town.
First put on the motor racing map by Raymond Mays and Bourne-based British Racing Motors (BRM), residents take pride in the town’s extensive history.
To recognise this, a cut-out model of a BRM Formula 1 racing car will be put in a raised stone, walled garden bed at the end of Coggles Causeway.
Mayor of Bourne, Colin Pattison, said: “There’s a lot of heritage and a lot of people particularly remember the racing cars.
“It’s going to be in an ideal position as people approach Bourne on the A15 they will see it.
“I think it’s a great thing. Why shouldn’t we show off our heritage?”
BRM was a British Formula One motor racing team participating from 1951 to 1977, and winning the constructors’ title in 1962 when its driver Graham Hill became world champion.
The cut-out design will be based on the model of the winning car in 1962.
Coun Pattison said: “I think it will be an absolutely fantastic herald not only to the history of Formula 1 but Raymond Mays who travelled the world and made it such a success.”
He also hopes it will encourage footfall into the town as people come to visit the model.
Debbie Cooke, owner of award-winning Creative Garden Design, has come up with the layout of the flower bed.
As well as the car, it will also feature a finish line and railway sleepers to acknowledge Bourne’s railway history.
In preparation for the work to be done, the bed was cleared this week and a stand for the car was installed.
It is hoped it will be completed by the time East Midlands in Bloom judges visit the town in the summer.
